Day 13
We got up and at the suggestion of Tim's friend in Zadar, decided to spend 3 nights in Trogir, a small coastal town right outside of Split. Having had an awesome time and place to stay in Zadar, it was a little hard to leave, but we both were ready to see a new place. Pulling up to Trogirs bus station, although the town was right on the water, you can't help but notice the huge oil rig in the water, which was a little distracting, that was when the first thought came of why did we ever leave Zadar. We get to an information desk and the woman was not helpful in how to get to the hostel where we were staying. We walk into the center of town where we ask several people if they can tell us how to get to the hostel--no one knows how to get there. Very hot, tired, a little stressed, and carrying our backpacks, we know we've reached test number 2.
We finally get vague directions from some locals and learn that it's on the other side of town...and of course up a huge hill. So with our backpacks, still both regretting leaving beautiful Zadar, walking up winding roads getting more and more lost. We thought we found the place finally, knocked on the door, and realized it was actually someone's house....whoops. After retracing our steps, and followings first Tim's route, we finally found it. The owner comes out and is one of the nicest woman we've met so far on the trip. She speaks very little English but offered us cold water and figs, which we made her husband show us how to eat. Not being able to say no to the hospitality we were receiving we both decided to stay there the full 3 nights (the place was called Apartmani Kate, so it of course had to be great...even though it was a little bit of a struggle for Tim to get over the idea that there was no wifi)
Tim asked the owner if there was a church nearby for Sunday Mass she immediately offered to walk us down will us to Mass.
We went out to dinner and then got back and really needed to do laundry. So with the camp soap our great backpacking friends gave us we (yes believe it mom and dad) did our own laundry by hand, getting water everywhere. We just hoped it would dry so we both would have dry clothes in the morning.
Day 14
We walked to church with the owners and attended Mass at the old stone church in the center of the city. The service was in Croatian, but Tim for the most part could follow along. It was a beautiful service and after our hosts took us out to coffee with a few of their friends. Kate tried to order an iced coffee, but gave up trying to explain it and just got a regular coffee. The husband could speak a little English but it was still amazing how much you could still communicate...he and Tim still were able to have typical guy conversations about boats and motors and such.
After coffee Tim and I decided to find this beach on the other side of the island, which we were told would take 30 minutes...we later found that was a 30 minute boat ride. After walking for 2 hours, passing about 4 beaches on the way, Kate complaining a little bit, and Tim praying that this beach is worth the walk, we finally come across it. Clear water, beautiful views, and great snorkeling, we both (even Kate) admitted it was worth the walk. We were able to catch a ferry boat back to Trogir and ordered in a massive pizza, Kate didn't think we needed the jumbo pie, we did as there was not a slice left.
