Day 15
We booked a fish picnic that left early in the morning. The boat which was a old converted fishing boat--a very fitting vessel for the fish picnic, as well as the captain who was only in an old tan man in a speedo smoking the whole time. We slowly cruised out to an island chain north of the town which took about an hour and half to reach. Twenty minutes into our trip we given a welcome drink of home made brandy (this was also 9:30 am) which was horrific and for the remaining hour the taste stuck in our mouths. Kate kept burping it up in her snorkel...gross. The island that we reached for swimming and lunch was incredible with a cove created by two small islands. The snorkel masks went into good use again. After swimming and walking around the island the grilled fish was ready. It was cooked over and open flame with light olive oil and spices, it was delicious! We then got back on the boat traveled to the harbor of a neighboring island that was an exclusive stop for the dozens of luxury yachts traveling up the coast of Croatia. We were a little offended no one asked us on their boat. Having enough of the sun we hung out dockside at a cafe then headed back to Trogir.
We began to pack our bags that night and still had some clothes we needed to dry before we could leave in the morning. Then we walked down into old town and for 12 bucks each got a salads, 2 calamari entrees, drinks, and deserts...we were not prepared to go back to the using the Euro!
Day 16
We had another long travel day ahead of us walking down to the end of the our street taking a water taxi down to Split for the day and then a night ferry over Italy. Getting to Split was brutally hot and we had one mission to drop our packs as soon as possible at a luggage storage--15 minutes later we were backpack free and much happier.
We then explored the old city and shopping districts. Tim was so happy when we found a city fountain to fill the water bottle and to cool off (pouring the water over his head, very bay watch style), he would visit three times later that day to cool off and replenish. Kate was able to find a shirt that was made in a factory she visited in Bangladesh while Tim went to go check out the Elvis Presley museum which was a very unique sight...couldn't believe the guide book missed that museum. Hot and ready to cool down we headed to the city beach just ten minutes away. It was a huge cove with a dock down it edges complete with diving docks and Tim's favorite cliffs to jump off. As Kate caught some rays Tim was hanging out with locals jumping off the cliffs in generally being the fearless the 13 year he claimed he used to be.
It was late in the afternoon and the effects of the sun took a toll on Tim and Kate took quick action. Finding a cafe with burgers and wifi for two hours we were locked into the screens planning our next week. Losing track of time we where going to be cutting close for our 8:30 check in time for our ferry to Italy. Well we thought it was check in at 8:30 depart 10:30 but as we got closer Tim commented on how empty the port looked, seconds later Kate looked up from her phone with a panic look. "Tim...the departure time is 8:30, check in was at 6:30" We had 25 minutes before the book took off we need to check in go through security and board the ship. Tim went into go-mode and just took off running through the terminal (Kate trying to keep up behind) luckily they had shut down the security check point so they only quickly stamped our passports and we made the boat.
This ferry was like the mega bus of ferries. Blue Line ferry is low priced costing about 1/4 the competition and for us which was perfect. Our bunk room was perfect for the 11 hour trip and the duty free store was Kate's favorite as she was able to feed her sweet tooth on the cheap. The boat was full of Italians and everywhere you looked we're groups of people surrounding a display of bread, meat, cheeses, and loud conversation---that's when we really knew we were going to Italy. We hung out on the decks of the boat for a few hours then heading back our room. Kate grabbed the top bunk and Tim the bottom.
